WHO INVENTED THE FIRST COMPUTER AND WHEN?
Welcome to Sciberr! The first thought that comes to our mind when we think of the word computer is the picture of some beautiful looking machine with some great specs. But has the so called machine always been like this!?.Well quite not.You might even argue over the fact that the fact that the first computer was actually an Abacus. But in today's post we are going to talk about the original programmable mechanical computer.
The first programmable mechanical computer was invented by Charles Babbage. The machine prototype was designed by him in 1849. However the full completion and execution of his prototype took place after 153 years in the year 2002.The original Babbage computer called Babbage Engine was actually 11 feet long and weighed five tons , consisting of roughly 8000 parts. Charles Babbage was an English mechanical engineer , working for navigational calculations. In 1833 he came up with the idea of an Analytical Engine design, which he thought was quite possible. The input unit for the design consisted of punched cards and the output unit consisted of a printer, curve plotter and a bell. The main units were mainly the Arithmetic Logic Unit, Control Flow, Integrated Memory.
PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED THEN:
The machine was actually quite advanced in its own and was way ahead of its time , actually a century ahead. The main problem was that the parts had to be made by hand which were thousand in number approx. The project then came to an end after the British Government stopped the funding for such complicated and advance project. The failure to build such machine could be attributed to the then politics and the budget. However Babbage's son Henry Babbage developed a simple version of the analytical engine's computing unit in 1888.
WORLD'S OLDEST ANALOG COMPUTER
World's oldest analog computer has been found in the Antikythera wreck off Greek island of Antikythera. It dates back to 100 bc. It works on the Antikythera mechanism and is believed to have been built to calculate astronomical positions. It was actually discovered in 1901.
